Highest efficiency and achievement-driven, powerful Samsung Cheil Industries
Dear Samsung Personnel, The New Year 2012 has come to us.
I wish you and your family good health and happiness for the New Year.
I believe the year 2012 will be a year of uncertainty due to the aftermath of the global financial crisis. The world economy is in recession and our domestic economy faces many unpredictable factors all over the industry and economy.
Many global corporations are standing at the crossroads of survival or death. Increasing corporate earnings by effective management is the key to corporate survival.
Samsung Personnel, I have been appointed as the new CEO of Samsung Cheil Industries last month and had visited each business units and fields where we tried to examine what our problems are and what can we do to secure continuous profit by increasing speed and effectiveness at the same time.
To overcome the global management crisis that it is hard to predict and move forward, we all must come to agree to breed strong corporate culture based on faster speed than our competitors and the most powerfully designed effective management system.
I would like to present "Highest efficiency and achievement-driven, powerful Samsung Cheil Industries" for our management goal for the year 2012.
I believe the unstableness in the world economy can even favor us to have the opportunity for stronger corporation. We must believe hard that if we are not afraid of crisis and if we make our advantages shine better, our company can be reborn stronger so we be even more powerful.
I will be taking the following steps with you for the achievement of our goal in 2012.
First, we have to accelerate the speed of our management.
In the high technology materials industry and fashion brand businesses that we pursue, "the Speed" is the most important value for success. We should not follow market trends but we must set market trends by presenting what customers need, in advance.
The success in the high-technology era will be determined by "Speed", and we must come up with a new and faster system than product’s changing pattern cycle. If we hesitate to make changes, we cannot speed up. And I believe the leader must change to have positive mental attitude first, therefore contributing to boost up the whole organization.
Faster decision making practices and execution than our competitors will enable us to have better market share, hence leading us to have continuous growth in the market.
Secondly, we must maximize management efficiency.
To overcome the uncertainty that is prevailing in Management environments, we must have an efficient organization. This could be compared to the high scores of athletes, which are always supported by well-maintained physical fundamentals.
Efficiency is simple. Better output than input. The key to management efficiency is for our personnel to become multi-functional by strengthening our ability.
The PSA, (Plan-Study-Action) that I stress, is the solution for efficient management. We have to plan and execute efficiency as top priority in all of our managerial activities.
R&D must contribute to corporate growth by contributing to cost-reduction and products that are clearly within the market goal.
Efficiency in high-yielding manufacturing processes in production can contribute to cost-effectiveness and higher production rates. In terms of quality, this is so fundamental that it can never be underestimated or negotiated. Potentially inferior quality factors must be evaluated in advance and be eliminated. And the sales forces will find strategic market penetration by evaluating products and markets with professional expertise.
The foundation of efficiency will be SCM, the highly optimized work process that clearly sets job responsibilities and rights thus enabling strongly held principles and smoothly running systems.
Thirdly, Let’s make a performance driven ‘Strong Company’
The essence of business management is to make profit. Bad business that loses money is like cancer that we have to make quick decision.
We must evaluate in detail for the business sectors that do not deliver good outcome, and change the sector to make profit.
Corporate competency is comprised of each and every employee’s personal performance in the corporation. And the strength of Samsung Cheil Industries to compete with global corporations comes from our will to make better performances.
Outcome-driven corporations make continuous profit even in economic downturns, and those companies have flexible and creative organizational cultures which open the bright future.
This will fortify the foundation for the mutual growth.
Samsung personnel, I would like to stress the fact that we are not afraid at all even if this year will be tough time because we have our clear goal and have strong confidence that we can carry on.
I believe your passion will lead our company to become a faster, more efficient and profit-making strong corporation.

CEO, Hwang Baek emphasizes that since the global financial crisis, the competition between global companies is becoming increasingly tense and that a life cycle of new technology doesn’t last long. 1% difference, unique competitiveness from products, and management of quality and customer service for marketing are indispensable.
In particular, change in perception is a pre-requisite to realize future business in this fast- changing market environment. Cheil Industries must adjust to the speed of global companies and environment. Growth engines of Cheil Industries led by LED, OLED, solar battery since last year including CNT, motor materials, fashion business in China and new brand launching should be realized earlier.
New communication culture which is changing our work system and culture from a one-sided direction to a network type horizontal organization must be leveraged further. Working hard itself is no longer sufficient. 'Work smart’ in order to improve infrastructure and working methods to heighten organizational creativity is very critical.
2011 is the year of the rabbit. A rabbit is always active and energetic. With its big eyes, it can adjust very well to different situations. It can survive during a critical crisis with its intelligence. The rabbit has core values such as speed, creativity and adaptation which Cheil Industries should adopt as well .
In conclusion, the CEO makes a precious promise with employees of Cheil Industries to realize our future business in advance with creativity and innovation and also to create a solid foundation of development for world’s first production on this New Year’s morning.

The 25th, ‘STAREX color conference’ event was held in the Cheil Industries R&D center located in Uiwang city, Gyeonggi-do.
As fashion R&D team’s team manager Kim Jung hee explained, product designers from Samsung electronics and other global companies took a memo analyzing the latest fashion color trend carefully.
STAREX is the united brand for plastic products which are manufactured in the Cheil Industries’ chemical department. Most of their products are used in LCD TV, mobile phone, electronics, and automobiles. Since the latest color trend of fashion is usually reflected on mobile phones or electronics one or two years later, fashion R&D team manager participated in sharing color and design trend of industrial materials
Following the introduction of trends, color lab designers from the chemical department who organized this event presented trend colors matching with the direction of industrial material color design and themes of each product introducing new products which applying newly developed colors with novel materials.
Cheil Industries Color Lab is rare and unique color design R&D organization in the B2B field. As high-tech IT products put more importance on emotional qualities such as design rather than technological differences, the specialized color for related materials and design became the primary concern.
Cheil Industries color lab was founded in 2005 and for the first time in Korea, such a lab was utilized to effectively respond to various color demands from global companies. Color lab had a main role in developing colors for international hit products such as Bordeaux TV, Blue Black phone from Samsung Electronics. Bordeaux TV and Crystal Rose, which achieved 1st place in international TV market, anti-scratch coating resin, first developed in Cheil Industries in the world, a high gloss, and a translucent material were applied.
Recently, the lab participated in developing materials for Samsung electronics’ main IT instruments like the Galaxy S and galaxy tab leading the color design of the latest IT products.
In color lab exhibition room designers can always come to analyze the latest color trends, and about 30,000 self-developed plastic color samples are exhibited. It also has a system where you can consult a color that you would apply to the products by looking through various color samples that reflects the latest trends. You can also can share diverse dyeing materials and particle test information through the web. Recently , they are developing materials using charcoal, jade, yellow earth, and other eco-friendly materials.
Hyung Joo Jung, a team manager of Cheil Industries Color Lab strongly said, “Now, it’s time that design determines how competitive the high-tech IT product is. We will focus on developing materials that will lead global design trends based on Cheil Industries’ 20 years experience in the chemical enterprise.”

¡à On the 30th, Cheil Industries announced winners of The Sixth Samsung Fashion & Design Fund (SFDF) which supports designers from Korea working all around the world.
Jung Sun Lee (brand : Jackie JS Lee), is the designer who caught the attention of Anna Wintour, American chief editor of magazine ‘Vogue’, minimalism fashionist, Sang Gyun Im (brand : Siki Im), a former senior designer of Karl Lagerfeld and Helmut Lang, and Wook Jun Jeong (brand : Juun J), who’s growing up to be an international designer through his Paris collection are the winners.
¡à Cheil Industries held the presentation ‘2011 S/S new collection’ consisting of 2011 SFDF winners at Rick Owens Seoul flagship store located in Shinsa-dong on the 30th. This event was about introducing the works of the 3 winners of 2011 and their amazing world to Korea. The winners participated in the event to explain their works. Meanwhile, the winners of 2010, Jin Lee/ Seung Bae Lee (brand : Clu) and Wook Jun Jeong exhibited Cheil Industries’ traditional casual Bean pole together with their collaboration clothes.
¡à Jung Sun Lee : Won high praise from Anna Wintour, an editor in chief of American ‘Vogue’ Designer Jung Sun Lee (Jackie JS Lee), who presents a modern collection using minimalism and calm, subtle colors, is a rising star of women wear design in London now based on her previous career as a model in Korea. She won the highest award called the “Harrods Awards” from a graduation collection of London Central Saint Martin, the best fashion school in England on February of 2010. And using this advantage, she gains support from the British Fashion Council (BFC) catching people’s attention as a rising star in London.

¡à Sang Gyun Im : Majored architecture at Oxford university and is a former senior designer of Karl Lagerfeld and Helmut Lang. Sang Gyun Im (Siki Im) has a very unique background. He was born in Germany, majored in architecture at Oxford University, and became a fashion designer in New York. Designer Sang Gyun Im, who approaches urban and Asian beauty in an architectural way, shows his unique sentiments not only in fashion, but also in other various fields including music, multimedia, graphic, etc. He also has a solid fashion foundation by working as a senior designer of Karl Lagerfeld and Helmut Lang. His talent began emerging when he won the Ecco Domani Fashion Fund which is a gateway to new designers in New York on January 2011.

¡à Wook Jun Jeong : growing is an international designer through support of SFDF Wook Jun Jeong, who is presenting successful collections every year in Paris, debuted with his brand called Juun J in Paris. International designers like Karl Lagerfeld acknowledged his talent and ability as Juun J is progressing as a strong brand. Wook Jun Jeong is building up more stable developments on his design, growing to be a leading designer, and improving the status of Korean fashion. As a result, Jeong was nominated in the 2011 S/S Swiss textile awards, and also was invited to the Barcelona Fashion Week. Iit was a pretty meaningful moment for Jeong to be selected as a winner in SFDF 3 times in a row since it started in 2005. Nam Young Park, a team manager of Cheil Industries SFDF executive office said “Designer Wook Jun Jeong is a very talented designer who fits perfectly to the goal of SFDF which strives for the improvement of the Korean fashion world . SFDF will continue to carry out the role of companion who looks after designers’ progress to nurture them into internationally-renowned designers.”

A team of WPM (World Premier Material) Flexible Display has been launched in which Cheil Industries, Inc. participates as a host .
The team had a launching show (kick-off) on the last 27th at Seoul KyoYuk MunHwa HoeKwan and introduced WPM Flexible Display Substrate Materials to over 100 guests from the Ministry of Knowledge Economy and the associates from the Korea Evaluation Institute of Industrial Technology as well as Gyu-hwa Jung (an executive director and a director of film research of Cheil Industries, Inc.), members of the steering committee, and researchers from the participating companies.
